November 23, 2024 — A Hands-On Experience Learning the Journey from Tree Felling to Finished Product

YAOTSU MALL’s “Play in the Mountain Village” events have traditionally drawn mostly adult participants, but this time the atmosphere shifted completely — the number of children in elementary school and younger actually outnumbered the adults.

After heading into the forest with Mr. Eiichi Ito of the Forest Livelihood Research Institute to gather nuts and materials for woodworking, participants enjoyed hands-on woodworking sessions led by students from Nagoya Zokei University. The event was held on the grounds of Iwadaira Tea Garden (@iwadairacyaenn) in Kusami, Yaotsu Town, where tea is grown without pesticides.

Children and adults alike were completely absorbed — hunting for nuts, whittling wood, and losing themselves in the joy of making things. It felt like a truly luxurious way to spend time in nature, and I think everyone who was there felt it too.

The woodworking activities planned by the students were enriched even further by ideas from the participants themselves, giving rise to entirely new creations. We shared a wonderful time together with everyone who joined us — it was a truly special day.
